Chrome Kremlin: The Best messenger bag!

This is why:

 Looks empty, doesn't it?

Well, it's not! Not only is this an awesome bag, but as you can see, I'm having a gourmet dinner tomorrow

In this picture the bag has still all the tools needed for fixing a bike and some textbooks. This bag takes 48 cans of beers without a budge and it's incredibly comfortable on your back even with that load.

Sad part is that you can't get these new anymore, but fear not Chrome has a new version of their big bag. It's called the Metropolis. Go buy it. Now! As you can see they've got a metric crap load of everything else bike related as well. All I know that the bags really take a beating and they're cool and comfortable.

In-joy!

EighthInch Scrambler V3 - the making of

How do you build a bike in a 20-something square meter apartment? Easy, I'll show you and tell a bit what I've done, how you can do it yourself and why a unique bike is always more fun than one from the store.

After waiting for the delivery from CyclingCloseOuts for one month I finally got to pick up a Scrambler V3 frame from the customs. Having chosen the Raw finish I found out that the frame has quite a few rust spots that are pushing through the clear coat already fresh from the box. The clean steel still looks rad and that was what I was going for this time; a colorless super bike (except the flag of France).

The frame comes with a sturdy fork, a seatpost, a cheap no-name headset and Eighthinch decals. Tools used - A Biltema bike tool kit and some special tools.

How to assemble a threadless headset

In case somebody wants to know how to assemble a threadless headset, Zinn Cycles shows how:

All of the tools used in this particular video are interchangeable with the products of your fantasies, but I'm telling you; life gets easier with the proper tools.

Tomorrow (hopefully) I'll have a ready bike rolling around Helsinki.

Build a bike - Cut the handlebar

As some of you might know, I'm building myself a new bike. A fixed gear bike. Because this blog exists I'd like to share with you some tips and tricks that I've taught myself over the past 4 builds.

First off, you don't need a fancy 50€ handle bar, unless you're a hipster and like your handlebar in an anodized color. My budget can't handle this, therefore I went shopping to Biltema and got myself a Sport handle bar for 6,99€ (a riser). It's 580mm (58cm) wide and has a diameter of 25,4mm. WIDE AS HELL some of you might say. Not to worry about. I can't maneuver a bike between cars with this wide a handlebar either. So let's cut it!

EighthInch Scrambler V3 - post #1

Helsinki will have to make space for an old rival of hers; Me. Because The building of a new fixed gear has begun. I've never done this with only new bits and pieces, but because of the sky high prices of used frames, I'm making a compromise this time.

The mail man brought me the first goods which I ordered from Charlie the Bikemonger last Thursday. It's Tuesday today! Charlie, your shipping time is unbelievable considering you send it from Swanage, UK. Check out the store, they also have their own website (off ebay). Fast delivery, cheap prices and always a pleasure to do business with them.

Gusset saddle
Sturmey Archer 170mm, 46T cranks and chainwheel
epic stickers

I built this wheel for my first fixie; VisaMaestro, but decided not to use it because I had a lightweight 5€ wheel from the 90's for it instead. Luckily now this pearl comes in handy.

Mavic CXP22 32H front wheel with a Suzue Promax hub

The building won't actually begin until I get the frame and I suppose it's the last part to arrive, as it always is. I'll give it two weeks. Still, I will have this bike assembled before 3,000 pageviews according to the little counter on the page is exceeded. I'll keep you posted about this sleek maniac!

flyingfreedolf / freddkay productions

This might seem irrational to some people ..actually most people but very rational to the little niche of biker boys and girls.

I was hoping to get something to munch on from the neighborhood shop eleven in the night, only to find out that their boss only pays double salary until ten. Luckily we have a pizzeria next door. So I get my 5€ night pizza, get out on the street and I realize:

The roads are dry.

It hits me: I have a front rim lying unused in my basement and pedals in my bag. All i need is a frame, a handlebar, a stem, a rear wheel, cranks, a chain, a seat tube, a saddle/seat, some grips, a headset, a bottom bracket, a chainring, a cog, some grease and some money. I'll keep you all posted about this, this ought to be something very exciting. I promise to have a bike built up before this blog have reached 3 000 page views!

I'll teach you all how to build a bike in the making! You've all seen these earlier productions, but because of the topic, they're getting posted once again. In-joy!

By the way, if you would be interested, I'm more than happy to build a bike for you too (situated in Finland, eli suomeks eller på svenska). Contact me!

Alas! A fifth one is coming and it's going to be breath taking!

Pursuit of happiness

There's nothing but air in front of him, nothing except a chilly breeze on his face while he pedal towards something called freedom. The warm, solid street under a pair of rapidly spinning wheels does not even budge while nearly flying forward between cars, trucks other cyclists, towards red lights and drafting after buses.

The remarkable feeling of being a reckless being, only jeopardizing ones own health while simultaneously remaining relaxed and having everything under control, constantly living 3 seconds in the future, traffic wise is a place where even an emotional wreck can withdraw his thoughts from everything and live fully in that exact moment.

A combination of a demon on the streets flying towards his destination with hypnotizing music playing in his ears makes a dangerous recipe. Little does he know of the truck behind the next corner, behind the next red light that he is about to neglect. The intersection is coming in front of him and he does nothing but accelerates, speeds up and lives in that 3 seconds ahead of time. Only this time he really needed 4 seconds.

All those rides, all those moments, every memory and all the loved ones was everything he could think of this morning. Now all he can see is something green and hear muffled screaming and yelling somewhere in the distance. It doesn't take long until everything turns black and mute.

All he wanted was to feel free.

Le Grand Parc

We are human beings. Most human beings prefer comfort and peace and if there's a trip to do most human beings choose a comfortable way to move around. Number one would be a car or a vehicle with an engine that you have full control over. Next ones are a bus or train or similar. Then comes the bikes that most people like to utilize in shorter trips. My solution, which isn't even a possibility in the eyes of the majority (simply because most people don't understand what it is) is a fixed gear bike! After something between 55 and 60 kilometers today on my beloved, simple and condition maintaining machine I partly understand the way of thinking of the majority. Partly. In the center of Lyon you overtake everybody with a bike and a competitive mind, so I'm going to prefer this racer of mine.

So how can you take on nearly 60km in one session? Easy! Go to Le Grand Parc with multiple 'getting lost' moments and enjoy the nature, water, peace, freedom and the activities. During summer you can sail, row and surf to name a few in the lake. If you're a golfer, pack your bag, call your caddy and go play with your friends. If you're a biker enthusiast or like to walk, there are five routes around the park of which the shortest is 5km and the longest is 31km. Just recharge your mp3 player or your singing skills, whichever you prefer and show yourself what you're able to do.

Human beings needs nutrition too. Here's an error Fred forgot in his eccentric ambitions on getting as fast as he could to his destination. I did the trip with the power of two eggs and a glass of water. Later I tumbled upon a banana, an apple and 2 liters of juice. 60km of constant pedaling and what is the reward? An apple ...and stiff, cramping thighs. Not regretting anything. Because now I'm going to enjoy a huge steak. In-joy some pics!
